Sun, Sea and Chlorine: Protect Your Colour Before Your Holiday

You have invested time and money in your colour. You have sat in the chair, trusted the process, and left the salon feeling exactly how you wanted to feel. The last thing you want is two weeks in the sun to undo all of that.

The good news is that holiday damage to colour is almost entirely preventable. The bad news is that most people only find out what they should have done after they get home with brassy, faded, or dried-out hair.

This is your guide to going on holiday with beautiful colour and coming back with it intact.

The Three Enemies of Colour-Treated Hair

  • UV Exposure does not just tan your skin. It oxidises the pigment molecules in your hair, breaking down colour, particularly toners, at a cellular level. Warm blondes turn brassy. Brunettes fade. Reds oxidise. The more time your hair spends in direct sunlight without protection, the faster this happens.
  • Salt Water is deeply drying. It strips the hair of its natural moisture and, more importantly for colour-treated clients, it opens the cuticle. An open cuticle means colour molecules escape more easily and environmental pigments, including the reddish minerals often present in sea water, can enter the shaft. This is why blonde hair can take on an unexpected warm or greenish tint after a beach holiday.
  • Chlorine is the most aggressive of the three. It is a chemical oxidiser designed to kill bacteria, and it has a similar effect on hair colour. It bonds to the copper deposits already present in hair, which is what creates the characteristic greenish tinge seen in blonde hair after extended pool exposure. It also strips moisture aggressively and can cause significant breakage in already-compromised hair.

What to Do Before You Travel

  • Book a strengthening treatment. The stronger your hair is going into your holiday, the better it will cope. Our K18 Booster at €20 works at a molecular level to repair damage and restore strength before you travel. Our Metal Detox Ritual at €30 is specifically designed to remove the mineral deposits that chlorine bonds to, making it the ideal pre-holiday treatment for anyone who swims regularly.
  • Get your colour fresh. Do not travel with colour that is already three or four weeks out from its peak. Fresh colour has a sealed, healthy cuticle that is far more resistant to fading. Aim to have your colour done within two weeks of travel.
  • Ask about a protective toner. Depending on your current colour, our team may recommend a specific toner that builds in warmth or depth to compensate for the natural lightening effect of sun exposure. This is part of the bespoke approach we take to every colour appointment.

What to Do While You Are Away

Wet your hair with fresh water before swimming. Hair that is already saturated with clean water absorbs significantly less salt water or chlorine than dry hair. This one habit makes a meaningful difference.

Use a leave-in conditioner or protective oil on your lengths before sun exposure. A physical barrier reduces the rate at which UV rays penetrate the hair shaft.

Rinse thoroughly after every swim. Do not let salt or chlorine sit in your hair for hours. The longer it sits, the more damage it does.

Avoid heat styling in direct sunlight. If you are blow-drying or using straighteners on a balcony or beside a pool, the combination of heat tools and UV exposure is significantly more damaging than either alone.

What to Do When You Get Home

Book a post-holiday treatment appointment. Our Bespoke Hair Care Ritual at €20 or our Metal Detox Ritual at €30 are ideal for restoring moisture and removing the mineral buildup that accumulates during holidays. A Bespoke Gloss at €40 will refresh your toner and bring your colour back to its best in a single appointment.

Your hair can absolutely survive a summer holiday. It just needs the right preparation and the right aftercare.

Call us on 01 668 4108 or book online to discuss your pre-holiday hair plan.
